Dear Alma,
I arrived here yesterday morning and as I had sent no word to meet me I came alone from the depot and found the family at breakfast. I didn’t learn just what time until it was too late to write but Will thought I ought to have sent a telegram. He would have surprised me as Hattie did by taking me to his new Buick. I was surprised anyway as they did not tell me anything about it and after he started out to go to the office Margaret said “I want to see Daddy go” so I went to the porch with her and saw Will in the new car about ready to start. It is very nice. In the evening (five o’clock) we all started out in it and had a fine drive to Vernon View. I think the trip was 20 or 30 miles.
I like the new house very much and the maid is the best we have had. I think this is going to be more like living.
Sat. morning Sallie and Tally and I left Canton on the Wheeling and Lake Erie road and went to East Cadiz and McGoverns had an auto there to meet us. The train was late so we just had one hour there, Mary had dinner ready - a delicious dinner. She has four nice splendidly trained children. She has everything very nice. Has a good colored servant and she spends a good part of her time in the store. We left at 2:30 and arrived at Hanlin station at 5:25. Rebecca Taggart was there to go up to Cousin John’s with us. We had a nice time in the country although it rained a good deal while we were there. There is an abundance of all kinds of fruit there, apples peaches and plums.
Margaret was glad to see me and is as sweet as ever. She has grown and is fatter than when we left. She asked where Aunt Alma was. She seemed to think you ought to come with me. Tom Keeler is here this morning and they are having a good time playing together. He will stay for lunch and go home when she is put to bed. I wish we had a nice place like this when you were here. You would have had a much better time.
Eva is practicing this morning. She has not had much time for music.
The Carpenters have not got the garage finished yet so the car is kept down town until it is finished. Eva has had a few lessons in driving one and has driven it considerably - about forty miles the day they went to Augusta. They were gone two days. Will had business up there. He is in charge of the office here. Col Langfit has gone on a vacation. His wife went I think before we did, and they will go to New Hampshire. It seems pretty warm here but this morning’s paper says it is warmer in Texas. How comforting that is to Savannahans to know there is a hotter place. It is up in the 90s. I must stop and write to Laura and uncle Jim. Will had a letter from him yesterday. Every thing is going all right since the storm.
With much love,
Mother
Margaret says to tell Aunt Alma to come home I miss her. She has that little green paper cap on that Anne sent to her. She and Tom are having a fine time. Tom let one of the autos - that Margaret got for Christmas - fall down the stairs and can’t get it all together again. So he is busy. Good by.
We will send your things on today. Eva only received the letter the day before I came. (Your pin is here)

1.
I arrived here yesterday morning
Mama Margaret and Alma had been on a summer trip out to California, and now was returning to living with Will and his almost-three-year-old daughter Margaret/Maggie.
2.
He would have surprised me as Hattie did by taking me to his new Buick.
I think this is Will's first car, and the Buick that his daughter Kay later complained about:
1989-12-28 ARTICLE BY KAY ABOUT WILL'S BUICK
I don't know who Hattie was.
3.
Sat. morning Sallie and Tally and I left Canton on the Wheeling and Lake Erie road and went to East Cadiz and McGoverns had an auto there to meet us.
Sallie is Mama Margaret's younger sister, Sarah B. Provines Ballard. Tally must be Sallie's son Talcott. Barbara has the nickname as Tallie.
The McGoverns must be Mary Virginia Holt McGavran and her husband Frank McGavran. Mary was a daughter of Mama Margaret's and Sallie's sister Agnes Provines Holt. Agnes died in 1894.
East Cadiz is about 40 miles southeast of Canton. I didn't realize that the town was East Cadiz, not East Cady, until after I did the audio reading, and I couldn't be bothered to do a corrected reading.
4.
We left at 2:30 and arrived at Hanlin station at 5:25. Rebecca Taggart was there to go up to Cousin John’s with us.
I figure Hanlin is probably near Steubenville, Ohio, which is where some Hanlin cousins were located.
Rebecca Provines Taggart was another sister of Mama Margaret, Sallie, and Agnes. She lived in Washington, Pennsylvania, and Alma kept in touch with her.
I don't know who Cousin John was. Some Provines or Gracey cousin, I imagine but I didn't look too hard for him.
5.
Tom Keeler is here this morning and they are having a good time playing together.
I don't know who Tom Keeler was, or if I have his name spelled correctly, assuming Mama Margaret spelled his name correctly in the first place.
6.
Eva is practicing this morning. She has not had much time for music.
Eva did the housekeeping for Will and little Margaret while Mama Margaret was traveling out west.
7.
Col Langfit has gone on a vacation.
Colonel Langfit was the chief engineer of the Southern Department at the time - for more details see the notes for:
1915-05-06 LETTER FROM MAMA MARGARET TO ALMA
8.
I must stop and write to Laura and uncle Jim.
Laura is obviously #4 of the Five Stokey Siblings, living in Canton, and uncle Jim is Jim Provines, a brother of Mama Margaret, Sallie, Agnes, and Rebecca. I think Jim was farming in Texas at this time.
9.
Margaret says to tell Aunt Alma to come home I miss her. She has that little green paper cap on that Anne sent to her.
Anne must be Anne Starr, Alma's good friend. There's a non-family page on this website for her.
