Alma G. Stokey, '08, head of the department of botany at Mt. Holyoke, was at Woods Hole during the summer doing research work.
Is Alma head of the botany department already, when she doesn't have tenure yet? That surprises me. I assume she sent this item in herself, however. I wonder if this was a subtle way of saying, "Hey! I just got promoted to head of the botany department!" But I don't think of Alma as subtle.
I mentioned this to AG, and we agreed that the reason Alma became department head before having tenure was that the position was vacated and it was obvious to everybody that she was the one for the job, whether or not she had tenure.
At any rate, it is interesting to see her in Woods Hole so many years before she built Fernbank.
