I don't understand the British school system, and I'm not inclined to see what I can find out about it now, especially since things may well have changed since 1911. Never mind. Tom Jackson has made his family proud, and that's nice.

My dear Kathleen,
I thought you would like to know how Tom has distinguished himself in the University Bursary Competition. He has come 2nd out of 359 candidates. The 1st bursar was from Stonehaven Academy so Tom is head of the Aberdeen schools, but of the top 10 bursars the Gordons College had 2nd, 3rd 7th and 9th or 10th places, and 6 other schools had one place each. The Rector of Gordons is just mad with excitement - especially as the Grammar School top place was 8th. The Girls High School had 4th place which is splendid for them.
The first intimation we had was the press reporters coming up for photos for their papers. Tom’s latest photo was in Footer clothes so he gave them that just to show I can play footer as well don’t you know? He is awfully pleased with himself + the people at church are delighted at seeing their ministers son figuring in the papers.
There was a sketch of his career in the papers + the Rector of Gordons told the reporters that “Jackson is the finest classical scholar we have ever had in the school.” We all bask in the reflected glory of course + telegrams letters + postcards are pouring in upon the lucky individual. The bursary is £30 a year for 4 years but his fees will be paid by Carnegie as well. Of course the highest honour is his position + it will stand him in good stead later on. He took the papers in Maths, English, Greek + Latin but has done best in Classics. He wants now to take his M.A. in Classics + English honours but his Rector thinks he should make sure of a 1st in Classics + then go on to Oxford or Cambridge for his English. That is if he gets the Aberdeen Scholarship later on.
You can guess we are all mightily pleased about it. Father has bought goodness knows how many papers + sent off round the world.
I think Tom is more pleased at having got his soccer blue than about the bursary - he has been eligible for varsity teams since his prelim last year + has been playing for the Varsity XI all the winter. Funny what things please boys isn’t it?
I must stop this isn’t meant to be a letter but only to let you know the news.
Much love from
Yours ever
Maggie

I enjoy reading Margaret Jackson's letters, but usually it feels as though I've entered another world, parallel to the world of the Five Stokey Siblings and their spouses but not touching it. But Kathleen found the news in this letter about Margaret's brother to be interesting enough so that she relayed it to her own brother, Cecil:
