Dear Mother,

We have just returned from church.  We have been trying to get a letter written for some time, but we seem to have very little time these days.  Mr. and Mrs. Shultz were up here from Los Angeles for several days, and they helped to take up our time.  They were at the Fremont when I first went to L.A., but have since moved into a beautiful home that they were building.  Margaret visited with them for a couple of weeks before coming north.

How do you like Margaret's new stationery?

My dear Mother,

We have just come up from lunch.  Will is going to take a nap so I will add a few lines and then post this.  We intended writing you for days - I suppose you wonder how I put in my time really I do not have an idle moment first comes the mending and cleaning.  Friday I cleaned nine pairs of gloves and washed any new pieces and Handkerchiefs.  San Francisco Climate is very hard on clothes, it's so windy and dusty.  I can wear my gloves just one afternoon, and they are very soiled.  It's very cold here too.  Can you imagine wearing heavy furs the entire year - I really think you need them more in the summer, than in the winter.  I can not keep warm.  I suppose I feel the cold after living in Southern California for several years - it's very much warmer there.  We received an Express package Friday from Los Angeles from Mr. Meyer.  You know he is one of the firm - Meyer Brothers Millinery Co.  They sent I mean Mr. and Mrs. Ben Meyer us a beautiful silver fruit dish and Mrs. Meyer's mother sent a perfect beauty in the way of a handpainted plate it's quite unusual.  We have received some very nice gifts.  A three piece coffee service that's a beauty.  my dear do write us soon, we are both anxious to hear from you I enjoyed Eva's letter so much.  Will write her soon.  Worlds of love from Both -
Margaret + Will

I am enclosing list of silver (over)

I wonder if you can ever make this out.  I thought I had used all the paper - and here I've a whole page left.  Will had a letter from Alma Friday - she tells us that she has lost her cat.  Will says it's the kind that always comes back.  I hope she finds him.  I feel quite interested in Friday.  I have heard so much about him.

I have just had a phone call from Mrs. Stannard.  You have heard Will speak of her - you know I have never met her.  She is going to call.  she is very fond of Will and of course I will like her all the more for this.  Well I guess I had better make haste so I can get this in the afternoon mail.  Worlds of love and same for Eva -

Margaret

Sat. A.M.

Dear Mother,

I just couldn't resist opening this letter before sending it.  I hope you do not care.  I think I shall buy them a doz. tea spoons if I can afford it.  They received nice gifts didn't they?  Am just ready to go to East Orange - me and my rat!

Lots of love,
Eva.

1.
The letter is completely undated.  I have given it a date of March 39, 1911.  Here's why:
It seems to have been written not long after Will's and Margaret's marriage.  Will mentions Margaret coming north from Los Angeles to San Francisco as if it were a recent thing, Margaret talks about the San Francisco weather as if she is still getting used to it, and there are wedding presents.
Zeroing in on the date, we have Margaret mentioning a lost cat of Alma's.
Will had a letter from Alma Friday - she tells us that she has lost her cat.
There's a postcard that Alma received: It doesn't say who sent it, which is sort of typical of Will, and it has a drawing of a lost cat hospital or something, so I've decided that Will sent it in response to hearing about Alma's lost cat.  That puts this letter near the end of March.
And finally, the letter was written on a Sunday:
We have just returned from church.
There are Christian Science services on Wednesdays as well as Sundays, but they are in the evening.  I don't think this letter would have been written after an evening service.  March 29 was the last Sunday in March in 1911, so that's the date I've given this letter.

And it's wrong.  This must have been written after the 4/3/1911 letter.  So I'm thinking.

2.
We received an Express package Friday from Los Angeles from Mr. Meyer.  You know he is one of the firm - Meyer Brothers Millinery Co.
Will said in the letter in which he first told his mother about Margaret: ...that Margaret was working at The Marvel:
She came out here on a visit and while out here found that she would have to make her own living and learned the millinery business.  She is head designer at “The Marvel”.
I haven't found anything about that.  For Meyer Brothers, Google AI says:
Meyer Brothers was a historic wholesale and retail millinery firm operating in Los Angeles during the early 20th century.
and
Historical records from late 19th-century Los Angeles point to I. Meyer Bros. (successors to Lud Zobel & Co. at 219 South Spring Street) operating as a prominent millinery and hat establishment in downtown Los Angeles.
I don't know what the relationship between The Marvel and Meyer Brothers and Margaret might have been.

3.
I have just had a phone call from Mrs. Stannard.  You have heard Will speak of her - you know I have never met her.  She is going to call.  she is very fond of Will and of course I will like her all the more for this.
Mrs. Stannard got Will to stop smoking for an unspecified length of time - see:
4.
From Eva's note:
Am just ready to go to East Orange - me and my rat!
I am quite sure that it wasn't an actual rat that was going with Eva to East Orange.  And I rather doubt that that was how she referred to Frank.  Maybe she had a small fur stole, or maybe she was using a hairpiece.  Or maybe it was something else.  I don't know.
