ENGINEER IS NON-COMMITAL
Capt. Stokey declines to express himself
While Capt. W. P. Stokey was greatly impressed yesterday by what he saw had been done in harbor building here and talked somewhat freely with local men regarding the harbor, he said it would be considered a breach of confidence and etiquette if his remarks were repeated or given publicity, as he is to report first to his superiors. That the harbor will be improved by government aid there is believed to be no doubt, however.
After the luncheon at the hotel, Captains Stokey and Hughes were taken for an extensive automobile ride, the machines of P. E. Hatch, C. J. Curtis and J. A. Rominger being used. The party, fifteen in all, went out Pine avenue, west on West Eighth street, then over to Anaheim, east to Temple and to the summit of Signal Hill, whence a comprehensive view of Long Beach and San Pedro harbors was had. In the trip about town, the engineers looked at the railroad properties here, the flats back of the harbor and the local manufacturing establishments. At the harbor, the new shipbuilding and the suction dredger were inspected. The engineers held a conference with the mayor and other local men at the National bank in the afternoon and did not leave Long Beach until late. Captain Hughes took a large number of notes during the day for Captain Stokey.
