LIEUTENANT LEEDS IMPROVING RAPIDLY
His Temporary Successor Expects to Be Kept Very Busy
Lieut. Leeds continues to improve. Captain W. P. Stokey, who is in charge of the United States engineer's office in Los Angeles during the illness of Lieut. Leeds, stated yesterday that the lieutenant is improving rapidly, though it will be several weeks before he will be able to leave his home.
Captain Stokey has been connected with the United States engineer's office at San Francisco, and on receiving telegraphic orders from the secretary of war Saturday afternoon immediately proceeded to Los Angeles and took charge of the local office.
Captain Stokey graduated from West Point in 1900 and saw two years of service in Manila as a member of the Third battalion of engineers.
He will be kept quite busy for the next few days familiarizing himself with the work the government has under way in Southern California.
The United States engineer's office in Los Angeles has jurisdiction over the territory from the Mexican line on the south to Monterey on the north.
