I just want to know: how did Mrs. Eddy know that a mountain stands for a grand and solid idea? Please note that I am sure that Cecil was quoting or paraphrasing her correctly.

My dear Kathleen,
As your exam is held this month, I suppose you will be in the middle of it when you receive this letter. Unfortunately I am unaware of the exact date. I dearly want to hear that you have gained the highest possible result, which humanly speaking would be the only right since you have worked so hard for it, but I think you will hold a somewhat different thought. I don’t think we ever look at exams in quite the same way when we begin to study Christian Science. We know, of course, that every object in what we call the material universe, has a spiritual fact behind it. That behind the material man is the spiritual man and the spiritual body, that behind the material bird is an inspiring though winging its way upward behind a beautiful flower, a thought of love, the rugged mountain Mrs. Eddy writes stands for a grand and solid idea, and that the only reason that we have a distorted view of this beautiful and glorious creation is that the mist mentioned in the first chapter of Genesis is obscuring our view. Now what is the spiritual fact back of a examination. It is this, as I see it. God is expressed by his creation. In glorified forms his children manifest his wisdom, his truth, and his love, and this is what we have to demonstrate in an examination. Don’t be afraid to tell people you expect a good position. Of course you don’t know for certain because nothing is absolutely certain in a material world, but you do know that everything that happens will be for good. Some people make a point of decrying the ability to be successful. This of course is foolish on their part and tends to bring about an undesired result. It is also generally untrue.
Again, do not hold thoughts of failure for anyone else. It’s somewhat easy to weigh people mentally and condemn them to failure. I’ve done it myself lots of times. Of course that is unkind, and what we should seriously object to on our own account. Also just keep mentally quiet. Let no thought of failure or success excite you. Reach out into eternity and realize that God has taken care of you and will take care of you, and that every instant He is guarding and watching his child. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I often think of you and do hope to be able to see you all again in the near future.
With ever so much love
Cecil
P.S. The “it” referred to in my last letter is a “picture” of myself and others. It will follow in a day or so.
Am glad to hear that although the Zeeburg broke up no lives were lost.

1.
Mrs. Eddy is Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science. Cecil must have meant to write "an inspiring thought" but written it "an inspiring though" instead.
2.
Of course you don’t know for certain because nothing is absolutely certain in a material world, but you do know that everything that happens will be for good.
So it's the material world that is uncertain, and it's the spiritual world that is certain. As happens so often, I can't help thinking of WS Gilbert:
If you come to grief, and creditors are craving
(For nothing that is planned by mortal head
Is certain in this Vale of Sorrow--saving
That one's Liability is Limited)
That quote is an incomplete sentence, but I won't burden you with the whole thing. I found it on the internet, and so can you, if you're interested enough.
3.
Am glad to hear that although the Zeeburg broke up no lives were lost.
Wikipedia's list of shipwrecks for 1909 says that the Zeeburg was a Dutch ship, and:
The cargo ship was wrecked in a storm on the south jetty at the entrance to the St. Johns River, she broke her back, a total loss. At least some of her cargo was salvaged. Crew rescued.
The St. Johns River is in Florida.
