TO EXAMINE RIVERS FOR LOCK SYSTEMS
Col. Kingman Leaves For Macon
Will Study Ocmulgee and Altamaha With View of Making Certain Recommendations to the War Department.
Savannah, Ga., May 24. --- (Special.) --- Colonel Dan C. Kingman, of the United States engineer's office in Savannah, went to Macon tonight, where the United States snag boat "Oconee" is awaiting him. In company with Captain W. P. Stokey, his military assistant, and Assistant Engineer E. R. Conant, Colonel Kingman will make a preliminary examination of the Ocmulgee and Altahama rivers from Macon to Darien.
He will also study the Ocmulgee river from Macon to Hawkinsville with a view of recommendations to the war department concerning a system of locks and dams as provided in the last rivers and harbors act. His report will be submitted to a board of engineers of the war department, which in turn may order a preliminary survey upon which can be based the approximate cost of the proposed improvements.

3.
It must have been on this trip that Will sent a couple of postcards that we have, one to Mama Margaret and one to Alma. See:

Proofreading error: It should be the Altamaha river, not the Altahama river. The headline is correct.
