My dear Will:

If you just knew how we all like to get letters from you I think you would write.  When Fred and I signed that paper I proposed sending to Alma first - thought it would save time but Fred said no.  Send to Will first and then he will write a letter.  I had to laugh when the letter came, short and sweet on the back of my envelope.  You dear boy are you being kept in reduced circumstances by your family?

Eva is getting anxious to hear from you wondering what you think of her engagement.  I told her I guessed you didn’t approve of it when you didn’t write.  She was almost afraid to tell Alma and was surprised to have such a nice letter from her.  She met Mr. Evans (Frank) when she was here, saw him several times and wrote that she “heartily approved of him but marveled at the speed.”  Said she didn’t want her to wait until she had a career before she married.  Frank is musical so they will both go right on studying.  He has commenced to take lessons of Madam Sousa, has a nice tenor voice, and plays too on the piano.  He intends to get a baby grand.  Perhaps you would like to know what I think of it.  Well in the first place I didn’t have time to do anything - either to encourage or discourage for the case developed so rapidly.  I never saw anything like it.  With him it seemed to be a case of love at first sight, and with her, though she liked him and admired him she didn’t want to love or be engaged for four years, but she says he is so much like Will she couldn’t help but love him.  So now she seems to have just as bad a case as he has.  He certainly is a nice clean kind sensible man, and I think will try to make her happy.  I like him very much.  He doesn’t seem to be the least bit selfish (that is one thing she couldn’t stand), but is generous and thoughtful.  He is rather backward and blushes easily.  I can’t see how he ever made up his mind to propose so soon.  I have written a lot about him for I supposed you would be interested.  Now do write soon.

They have gone to Brooklyn today to visit his brother’s wife’s brother & wife.  Next Saturday they are going to Philadelphia to visit his people.

Now my dear boy when are you going to get your vacation?  I will go to Mt. Holyoke in two weeks I think.  And Eva will come soon after Commencement.  I think it is about the middle of June.  We will have the house to ourselves for a while.  We will all go some place for a while in the summer.  If we can find a reasonable place.

I will now close hoping to hear from you very soon.

The paper was something on which Laura needed the signatures of her family - see Mama Margaret's letter from when she was visiting Fred in Michigan: I don't know what it was, but I figure it had something do with Laura starting an osteopathic practise in Canton.  Mama Margaret doesn't mention Laura's name in this letter, but since the paper was for Laura, I've added this letter to her related documents.

I'm not sure that the name was Sousa, but that's my best guess.  I googled and found a singer named May de Sousa 1884-1948, but she didn't seem to be the right one.​
