Iloilo, Panay, P.I.,
April 16, 1905
Dear Eva,
Two years ago yesterday we left Washington to come to the P.I. We have received no orders yet to go to the U.S. but I suppose that they must be out by this time.
I have about finished my work here. I go to Cebu to make a survey before going back to Fort Wm. McKinley. I had to miss going to the rifle competitions on account of the survey.
The other day I learned from our chino cook how to multiply and divide on the chinese counting machine. I think it is called an abacus (It is one of the first words in the dictionary anyway). It increased my respect for the chino’s brains.
I was thinking of getting some Dhobie itch and sending it to Alma. The doctors say it is caused by a fungus. I asked one about and he said it wouldn’t keep unless it was made into slides.
I had a bilious attack about a week ago. The doctor said he thought it was from eating too much meat. I am turning into a vegetarian now. We get good beef out here very cheap while most of our vegetables are canned. That is not a good combination to make vegetarians.
I noticed that the “Mothers Congress” had decided to quit “Now I lay me”. They have adopted a more modern prayer. I didn’t think much of it. I think you might invoke the Muse and get them up a better one.
We are in the midst of the mango season. They are delicious. It is a pity they don’t ship them to the states.
There isn’t much doing here so I will close.
Love to all,
Will

1.
I go to Cebu to make a survey before going back to Fort Wm. McKinley. I had to miss going to the rifle competitions on account of the survey.
This is a shame. From Will's previous letter:I made expert rifleman at our target practice a few weeks ago. I will probably be sent to the Department Competition if I get back to Manila in time for it. I also get a silver badge.
Fort William McKinley was in Manila.
We have a newspaper item mentioning the Cebu survey:
2.
I was thinking of getting some Dhobie itch and sending it to Alma. The doctors say it is caused by a fungus. I asked one about and he said it wouldn’t keep unless it was made into slides.
Dhobie itch:
Fungal infection causing intense itching and inflammation in the groin region.
I think Will was joking. I think.
