North Wind Brought the Storm King Out of His Lurking Place---The Storm Is Widespread.
Canton was in the grip of a blizzard yesterday and last night. The weather was not so intensely cold but there was a high wind blowing out of the north that added to the suffering of pedestrians, and so far as actual suffering was concerned it was the worst day of the winter. The temperature during the day stood 7 or 8 above zero, but as the night advanced it dropped very near the zero point.
Prof. C. F. Stokey, in discussing the matter last evening, said that at his point of observation there had not been any zero weather this year, the lowest being 1.4 above, but that he was satisfied that in the low valleys around the city the temperature had been lower. He recalled an experiment that he tried at one time on a still day when there was a difference of 14 degrees between the temperature on the top of a hill and in the valley.
The storm that struck Canton is one that is universal in the country and which is said by reports to have reached the Gulf coast. So far as known there was no actual suffering in this section, but in the east a number of deaths are reported from freezing. Mild weather can be looked for within a day or two unless another blizzard should be turned loose in the great northwest which seems to be the hatching place of such storms.
1. Prof. C. F. Stokey, in discussing the matter last evening, said that at his point of observation there had not been any zero weather this year, the lowest being 1.4 above, but that he was satisfied that in the low valleys around the city the temperature had been lower. I would have thought that the temperature would be lower on the hills rather than in the valleys. But apparently I would have been wrong.
2. He recalled an experiment that he tried at one time on a still day when there was a difference of 14 degrees between the temperature on the top of a hill and in the valley. It seems to me that this was more like research rather than an experiment, but never mind. Papa Charles was curious, and that's all that matters.
