Mrs. Jane Provine Dead.
Mrs. Jane Provine, of 921 West Ninth street, died very suddenly Saturday morning, of heart failure. About 4 o’clock she called members of the household to her bedside and told them that she was ill and that she thought her end was near. Relatives were sent for, but before they arrived, Mrs. Provine had breathed her last. She was conscious to the end and conversed with those about her bedside.
Mrs. Provine was born in Pennsylvania, and came to Canton twenty years ago. She was a widow, her husband having died about five years before her removal to Ohio.
The deceased was the mother of a large family of children. She made her home with her sons, John and James Provine, at 921 West Ninth street. Mrs. Margaret Stokey and Mrs. T. T. Ballard, all of Canton, are daughters of the deceased, and Charles Provine, of Neatoon, Ill., Mrs. Mary Hicks, of Michigan, and Mrs. Taggart, of Washington, Pa., are also children.
The deceased was 80 years old. The funeral will take place from the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Dr. Manchester, her pastor, will conduct the services.

Mrs. Jane Provine Dead.
They didn't know that there was an S at the end of the name. The mistake is repeated all through the obituary.

Mrs. Jane Provine, of 921 West Ninth street, died very suddenly Saturday morning, of heart failure.
According to Barbara's information, Grandma Provines died on December 17, 1900, which was a Monday. Conceivably they couldn't get the death certificate signed until Monday, or maybe the reporter fouled up the date as he or she fouled up the name.

Interesting story. Who gave the reporter the details? And (assuming that this wasn't something else that the reporter fouled up) what made Grandma Provines so sure that death was upon her?
Eight years later, Papa Charles wrote in
1908-01-20 FAMILY RECORD BY PAPA CHARLES
Jane Gracey Provines, Dec. 17, 1900, at 921 W. 9th St., Canton, O, of Acute Indigestion.
So the newspaper story says it was heart failure, and Papa Charles says it was acute indigestion. Papa Charles wouldn't have been on the scene, of course, since by this time the divorce between Papa Charles and Mama Margaret had been finalized, I believe.
I talked to AG about this, and she said it made sense to her, because a heart attack can feel like acute indigestion.

According to Barbara's information, Grandma Provines was born on May 11, 1820, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Grandpa Provines was John Provines, born in Ireland on January 1, 1807, and died in Washington County Pennsylvania on January 10, 1877. So maybe he saw his little grandson Will Stokey.

These children, along with Grandma Provines, are in the Provines and Gracey section of this website. I haven't seen much about John. James was Uncle Jim, about whom we have a fair amount. Margaret was, of course, Mama Margaret. Mrs. T.T. Ballard was Aunt Sallie Ballard. We don't have much of anything about Charles. Mary is Aunt Mary Provines Hicks, and I'm surprised to see her placed in Michigan, because although she ended up there, I think that at this time she was living in Canton. Mrs. Rebecca is Aunt Rebecca Provines Taggart, whom Alma and Eva visited in Pennsylvania on a road trip in 1934. There were also other children.
