I have this totally unjustified movie in my head of the participants in the judicial convention in Coshocton boozing it up and smoking huge Cuban cigars and telling scurrilous tall tales about their best cases and pinching and slapping innumerable female bottoms, and getting absolutely nothing useful done. No doubt it was a very sober and sedate affair.
Attorney Judge Albaugh representing Charles F. Stokey in the divorce suit commenced by the wife of the latter came into court Monday morning and asked Judge McCarty to postpone the case as Mr. Welty would not be able to try it on Tuesday. Mr. Welty is going to the judicial convention in Coshocton. Judge Fawcett protested against the postponement on the ground that witnesses had come for the trial. The court, however, laid the case over but said he would try it as soon as possible.
Attorney Judge Albaugh and Mr. Welty are Papa Charles's lawyers. Apparently Mr. Welty is doing the trial work, not Mr. Albaugh.
Judge McCarty is the presiding judge for the case.
Judge Fawcett is Mama Margaret's lawyer.
May 22, 1900, when this article was published, was a Tuesday.
3. So the article is saying:
One of Papa Charles's two lawyers, Mr. Albaugh, came into court yesterday morning in the divorce case started by Mama Margaret and...
Papa Charles's lawyer Mr. Albaugh asked the judge to postpone the hearing of the case, which was scheduled to be heard today, because...
Papa Charles's other lawyer, Mr. Welty, who is doing the trial work, would not be able to be present in court today, because...
he (the other lawyer, Mr. Welty, who is doing the trial work) is going to the judicial convention in Coshocton (another Ohio town).
Mama Margaret's lawyer, Mr. Fawcett...
protested against the postponement on the ground that...
witnesses had come for the trial.
The judge, however...
postponed the case but...
said he would try it as soon as possible.
4. Why did Welty & Albaugh wait until the day before the case was scheduled to be heard before telling the judge that Welty couldn't be there? (Assuming I understood the article correctly.)
5. I would be interested to know who the witnesses who had come for the trial were. I imagine they might be neighbors who heard the shouting at the Stokey house and who have since moved away. Or maybe it was somebody that Papa Charles had talked to about selling the house where Mama Margaret was living.
