The cover page says this book was published in 1916, but by 1916 Fred had been to Africa and back, and Cuba was a distant memory, so I am putting this document in 1899.

1.
It is clear from the other records that the transport ship that took them back from Cuba to the US was the Mohawk, leaving Cuba on August 18 and arriving in New York on August 25. I figure the trip to Cuba also went through New York. So Fred's army experience might have gone something like this:

Here is the record for Fred:
Fred entered the army hospital on Long Island on August 25, the day that his transport ship arrived in New York. I figure he was sick before that, but that he didn't think there was anything to be gained by reporting sick while still on the ship. The month's sick furlough suggests a serious illness, but I imagine there wasn't much point in getting the soldiers back to work when everybody knew they were all going to be discharged soon. Of course, in 1899 any illness was potentially serious - as is, of course, any illness today.

There's a mention of Fred being away from home in a June 1898 letter from Eva:

- Late June or early July: troop train to New York.
- Early July: Ship from New York to Havana Harbor in Cuba.
- Early July to August 18: Troops are on the ship in Havana Harbor.
- August 18: Troops are sent back from Cuba to New York on the ship Mohawk.
- August 25: The ship Mohawk arrives in New York, and the troops have nothing to do while waiting for discharge.
- A month or two later the troops are sent back to Ohio.
