Google tells me that $8 is about $300 in today's money, and this was before income tax. So, $3,600 per year, untaxed. Not riches, but certainly helpful.

Declaration filed Jan'y 26, 1899, alleges permanent disability, not due to vicious habits from disease of stomach bowels and liver.
I keep assuming that "vicious habits" means consumption of alcohol, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
