Tackle the Capitalists and Decide What They Should Do – School News.
The high school literaries held their regular exercises Friday afternoon and some very pleasing performances were given. The Irving society programme was as follows: Declamations, Grace Carnes and Phil Thompson; essays, Eva Smith and Alma Stokey; select reading, Florence Lind. The question of debate, resolved, That the capitaists should rather expend their surplus profits in raising their laborer’s wages than in institutions for their benefit, was affimed by Jos. Dillon and Victoria Boyer and denied by Jacob Hawk and Nora Platt. The decision of the judges was in favor of the affirmative. The society also voted in the affirmative on the merits of the question.
In the Lowel Society the following exercises were given:
Declamations – Bertha Hackman, Jerome Hammond and Luella Kidd, essays – Idaline Hahn and Charles Hurd; select readings – Mary McKnight and Florencs Miller. The question of debate was: “Resolved, That poetry has benefitted mankind more than prose fiction.” It was affirmed by Byrne Given and Sadie Moore and denied by Louis Ganchat and Daisy Lantz. The decision by the judges was in favor of the affirmative.
EXAMINATION IN PROGRESS
The Stark county examiners are holding examination in this city today for the city teachers and for pupils who want to go to the high school under the provisions of the Boxwell law. There are forty-five young ladies and gentlemen, principally the former, who are puzzling their wits over the questions and trying to get city certificates, and thirty-five boys and girls from the country who are taking the examination so that they may be able to have the same advantages in the high school as the city youths.
