1.
IN MOLLY STARK
I don't understand why it's referred to as Molly Stark, not just Stark County. I looked up the Stark County name, and received no enlightenment.
2.
For President, Harrison, 9,387; Cleveland, 10,471; Weaver, 452; Bidwell, 604.
I'm wondering if Bidwell was Thomas J. Bidwell, the father of Eva's friend Florence. According to the 1904 Stark County Biographical Compendium, he was active in politics. So I'm adding this document to the Non-Family list for Ohio folks.
3.
For Clerk of Courts, Stokey, Republican, 8,808; Coxen, Democrat, 11,067. Coxen's plurality, 2,242.
This article doesn't give candidate Stokey's first name, and there were other Stokeys in Canton, but I think that Papa Charles was the only Stokey who was actively involved in politics, and he was certainly a Republican, so I think this candidate Stokey must have been Papa Charles.
I wonder if Papa Charles had any hope at all of winning. It's admirable that there were so many Republicans running in what they surely knew was a losing battle. And Papa Charles lost worst of all. He got fewer votes than any of the other Republican candidates, and he was the only one who lost by more than 2,000 votes. He was a vigorous personality. Maybe he rubbed some people the wrong way.
4.
William McKinley, who was a friend of Papa Charles and who was later President of the United States, was governor of Ohio at this time, having been elected in 1891. He was a Republican and he was from Canton, but apparently that didn't help any of the Republican candidates in Canton in 1892.
