Ungraded Department --- Mr. Chas. F. Stokey 500
I don't know what the ungraded department was, and couldn't figure out a good search for it.
Papa Charles's salary for the school year is $500. I checked online and learned that this $500 in 1877 was worth about $15,000 today. This seems glaringly inadequate to me, but he's being paid more than most of the other teachers, so I must be missing something about how life was lived in Canton in 1877.
Some comparison: in 1899, Will was earning $540 at West Point, which is worth $19,000 today - see:

German School --- Mr. F. Griese...$650
Interesting. Long ago, my mother that my great-grandfather Stokey, i.e. Papa Charles, went to a German-speaking school. Or anyway, I think it was my great-grandfather. It couldn't have been his father, Pierre Stokey, because Pierre immigrated to the US after he was grown. And I think it would have stuck in my mind if it had been my grandfather, so it must have been Papa Charles. How did my mother know? I surmise that the subject came up in evening conversation during one of the summers during World War II when my mother was staying at Fernbank. And if that was the case, and if it was Papa Charles who went to the German-speaking school, then why were they talking about him? The Five Stokey Siblings just didn't talk about their father. Ever. Anyway, that's what my mother said, and at the time I imagined whichever ancestor it was going to a special school for German-speaking kids, but the line here in this item makes me think it was regular part of the Canton public schools.
Hmm...maybe they were talking about the Germans - it being World War II - and/or maybe Aunt Alma said "Gott sei dank" as she did once or twice in a letter - and so it got mentioned - whatever it was.
Another weirdness: I think that Papa Charles's father's native language was French, not German. Somewhere or other we have a bunch of lettersr that Papa Charles wrote home when he was in the Union Army in 1865. And on one of the letters, to his father, was written "reçu", which is French for "received", and then the date. So maybe Papa Charles, who taught French and German, saw the opportunity offered by the German school, and had his Will and Alma learn German? It doesn't seem likely.
Another possibility: My mother simply got the story wrong.
