MT. UNION
M. E. Sabbath-school picnic on the 9th inst.
The public schools are to be under the superintendency of Mr. J. H. Breese during the next year.
The attendance at college is but little more than one-half that for the corresponding time last year. Cause: Hard times.
Mr. J. B. English, an old and respected citizen, and Mayor of the village, died of typhoid fever on the 29th ult.
Miss Clara Preston, a lady of extensive experience and eminent ability as a pianist, has been chosen to that position in the Cosmian Literary society.
Prov. F. W. Wood has assumed the duties of the chair of Modern classics once so ably filled by the lamented Scherf, more recently by Prof. C. F. Stokey. Prof. Wood is a proficient in Italian and Spanish, as well as French and German.

1.
M. E. Sabbath-school picnic on the 9th inst.
M.E. surely stands for Methodist Episcopal. "9th inst" means the 9th day of this month, so September 9, 1876..
2.
Mr. J. B. English, an old and respected citizen, and Mayor of the village, died of typhoid fever on the 29th ult.
"29th ult" means the 29th day of last month, so August 29, 1976.
3.
Prov. F. W. Wood has assumed the duties of the chair of Modern classics once so ably filled by the lamented Scherf, more recently by Prof. C. F. Stokey.
This conflicts with what was in a 1904 summary of Papa Charles's life: In 1874 he was elected principal of the high school at East Liverpool, Ohio. Severing his connection with the schools of that city, Prof. Stokey accepted the chair of modern languages (French and German) in Mt. Union College, and after holding the position two years he came to Canton in 1877 to take charge of the special department of the public schools.
I think it likely that this newspaper article is correct and that Papa Charles remembered things incorrectly nearly 30 years later, but I don't know. It sounds as though he particularly remembers the year 1877 as the year in which he came to Canton. Alma was born in Canton in June 1877, which suggests that he was already there, but there could be other reasons for Papa Charles and Mama Margaret being in Canton at that time.
